Medieval music and the music of Celtic areas have a very particular charm, which we recognize immediately, and from the first listening we know how to distinguish from how much we usually listen.
Various elements contribute to defining this very strong identity.
It’s about the instruments, with their very particular sound: the sweetness of the Celtic harp and the flute, and their ability to evoke rarefied and dreamy atmospheres, the brilliance of the psalter and the bardic harp, the composure and solemnity of the bodhrán.
It’s about the melodies contribution, which mainly use the Doric, Misolidian and Hypodoric modes to develop, while modern western music has substantially reduced to the hypodoric mode only.
From the point of view of the variety of ways, ancient music and in particular medieval music can be considered immensely richer than the next.
Ireland in particular, like many areas in ancient times influenced by the Celts, starting from the Middle Ages has remained musically isolated for almost five centuries, thus preserving an independence that allowed it to music to articulate on the various modes, without undergoing the same selection that occurred on the continent, and in the rest of the western world.
Even the way of arranging has naturally evolved as it happens for each popular musical area, specializing in the use of traditional instruments available, and helping to constitute a further element of diversification.
The proposed repertoire wants to make evident precisely this peculiar aspect of ancient and traditional music, ranging in the arias among the most interesting of the Irish, Scottish, Breton, Welsh and the island of Man, and the most fascinating medieval melodies.
The specific peculiarities of each area can also be recognized in each song, the melodic richness of the Irish tunes, the variety in the embellishments of the Scottish that despite modulating on a less extensive scale, the ballability of the Bretons, the emotionality of the Welsh, the rhythmicity and intrinsic beauty of medieval melodies.

La musica medievale e la musica delle aree celtiche possiedono un fascino tutto particolare, che riconosciamo subito, e sin dal primo ascolto sappiamo distinguere da quanto siamo soliti ascoltare.
Vari elementi concorrono a definire questa fortissima identità.
In parte sono gli strumenti, con i loro particolarissimi timbri: la dolcezza dell’arpa celtica e del flauto, e la loro capacità di evocare atmosfere rarefatte e sognanti, la brillantezza del salterio e dell’arpa bardica, la compostezza e solennità del bodhrán.
In parte contribuiscono le melodie, che utilizzano prevalentemente i modi dorico, misolidio e ipodorico per svilupparsi, mentre la musica moderna occidentale si è ridotta sostanzialmente al solo modo ipodorico.
Dal punto di vista della varietà dei modi, la musica antica e in particolare la musica medievale si può considerare immensamente più ricca della successiva.
L’Irlanda in particolare, come molte aree anticamente influenzate dai Celti, a partire dal Medioevo è rimasta musicalmente isolata per quasi cinque secoli, conservando perciò una indipendenza che gli ha consentito alla musica di articolarsi sui vari modi, senza subire la stessa selezione verificatasi sul continente, nel resto del mondo occidentale.
Anche il modo di arrangiare si è naturalmente evoluto come accade per ogni ambito musicale popolare, specializzandosi sull’utilizzo degli strumenti tradizionali a disposizione, e contribuendo a costituire un ulteriore elemento di diversificazione.
Il repertorio proposto vuole evidenziare proprio questo aspetto peculiare della musica antica e tradizionale, spaziando nelle arie tra le più interessanti della tradizione irlandese, scozzese, bretone, gallese e dell’Isola di Man, e le più affascinanti melodie medievali.
Si potrà poi cogliere in ciascun brano anche le peculiarità specifiche di ciascuna area, la ricchezza melodica dei tunes irlandesi, la varietà negli abbellimenti delle scozzesi che pur modulano su una scala meno estesa, la ballabilità delle bretoni, l’emotività delle gallesi, la ritmicità e intrinseca bellezza delle melodie medievali.
