Celtic harp is a string instrument in the Celtic area between the Middle Ages and the 17th century, as a instrument to accompany the voice or other soloists, and as a solo instrument itself.
It is among the ancient instrument the most complete, because it allows you to perform melody and accompaniment together.
The most traditional harp, the harp of the Bards, had 30 to 32 strings, and with this number of strings it is possible to play not just the music of Celtic influence, but all or almost popular music.
This is why we find the harp even in the most disparate peoples, the Egyptians had it, the Asian populations had it, some centuries ago it spread to South America.
And in each country it has changed shape, size, number of strings, the way of being played.
But it has never lost his immense charm!
When we think about the Celtic harp we immediately associate it with a sweet and caressing sound.
It is no coincidence that the classic harp as well as being used in the orchestra is also used for Christmas music and lullabies.
It has not always been like this.
Now also the Celtic harp often has the same kind of strings as the classical harp and has inherited its sweet sound, but once at the time of the Bards the harp had bronze or brass strings, but still metal.
Today's the "Fingertip" technique also derives from this change.
The Bards in fact largely used the nails, to the point that the punishment for a bard that had made angry their patron, often consisted in cutting the nails.
The harp with the metal strings has a much more incisive and brilliant sound than we know: it can play alone because of the greater volume and resonance, and in the hands of a good harpist it can give the impression that they are many instruments playing together.
The harp with gut or nylon strings is very suitable to accompany singers or solo instruments, its happiest connection is the one with the flute.
The Psalter is a medieval instrument with 30-35 strings, which is used here as a soloist, played with a bow to counterpont to the transverse flute.
There is also a plucked psalter, more suitable for accompaniment, has less incisiveness but great sweetness.
Widespread throughout the Iberian and Germanic area, it is now practically disappeared, it is generally found only in medieval or re-enactment music.

L’arpa celtica è uno strumento a corda usato nell’area celtica tra il medioevo e il XVII° secolo, sia come strumento per accompagnare la voce o altri solisti, sia come strumento solista essa stessa.
E’ tra gli strumenti antichi il più completo, perché permette di eseguire insieme melodia e accompagnamento.
L’arpa più tradizionale, l’arpa dei bardi, aveva da 30 a 32 corde, e con questo numero di corde è possibile suonare non solo tutta la musica di influenza celtica, ma tutta o quasi la musica popolare.
E’ per questo che troviamo l’arpa anche presso i popoli più disparati, l’avevano gli egiziani, le popolazioni asiatiche, si è diffusa parecchi secoli or sono anche nel Sud America.
E in ogni paese ha cambiato forma, dimensioni, numero di corde, modo di essere suonata.
Ma non ha mai perso il suo immenso fascino!
Quando pensiamo all’arpa la associamo subito a un suono dolce e carezzevole.
Non è un caso se l’arpa classica oltre a essere utilizzata in orchestra è usata anche per le musiche natalizie e le ninna-nanne.
Non è stato sempre così.
Ora anche l’arpa celtica ha spesso le stesse corde dell’arpa classica e ne ha ereditato il suono dolce, ma una volta al tempo dei bardi l’arpa aveva corde di bronzo o di ottone, ma comunque di metallo.
Anche l’odierna tecnica “a polpastrello” deriva da questo mutamento.
I bardi infatti utilizzavano in gran parte le unghie, al punto che la punizione per un bardo che avesse fatto arrabbiare il proprio mecenate, spesso consisteva nel taglio delle unghie.
L’arpa con le corde metalliche possiede un suono molto più incisivo e brillante di quello che conosciamo: può suonare da sola perché ha volume e risonanza maggiori, e nelle mani di un bravo arpista può dare l’impressione che siano più strumenti a suonare insieme.
L’arpa con le corde in budello o nylon si presta molto ad accompagnare il canto o strumenti solisti, il suo matrimonio più felice è quello con il flauto.
Il salterio è uno strumento medievale a 30-35 corde, che qui è utilizzato come solista, suonato ad arco per fare da contrappunto al flauto traverso.
Esiste anche un salterio a pizzico, più adatto all’accompagnamento, ha minore incisività ma maggiore dolcezza.
Diffuso in tutta l’area iberica e germanica, è ora praticamente scomparso, lo si trova in genere solo nell’ambito della musica medievale o di rievocazione.
